Community Care in Action: How WoodGreen Is Transforming Lives Across Toronto

Susan Fuehr, Communications Consultant

In a year of change, challenges and uncertainty for many in Toronto, WoodGreen Community Services has remained a constant.

For 88 years WoodGreen has shown what dedicated community care can accomplish.

Now we’re highlighting a year of growth and innovation in care across Toronto with our 2024–2025 Annual Report.

See how WoodGreen is helping more people in more ways than ever before.

Housing. Stability. Hope.

WoodGreen is tackling Toronto’s housing crisis head on; providing 1,846 social housing units across 39 properties.

These are safe, affordable homes that create stability and a Toronto where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

See where we’ve added housing units and the communities they serve.

Supporting Toronto’s Youth and Seniors

Bold plans and inspiring moments defined our youth community services this year. The Youth Wellness Centre supported 2,836 young people with wellness and mental health. WoodGreen Community Services can now offer stronger, integrated support for Toronto’s youth after welcoming Turning Point Youth Services (TPYS) to our organization.

WoodGreen also helped more youth secure stable housing than ever before. But what’s behind the big increase? Take a look at the report.

Looking ahead, our new 20,000-square-foot Youth Wellness Centre opening next year will unite a full range of youth-designed supports under one roof for more than 3,000 young people annually.

For older adults, community care remained a lifeline:

Decades of Economic and Family Empowerment

This has been a landmark year for one of WoodGreen’s flagship programs; Homeward Bound.
For 20 years, Homeward Bound has helped single-women-led families in Toronto break the cycle of poverty.

WoodGreen’s Homeward Bound offers housing, education and wraparound support for women and their children. More than 300 women and 470 children have built stable, independent futures through Homeward Bound. With a record number of participants this year, and an expansion of the program in partnership with Toronto Community Housing, it’s the story of one of the very first children in the program that drives home the generational change Homeward Bound can bring.

How Homeward Bound changed the course of Nawal’s life.

WoodGreen’s efforts this past year produced outcomes that show what effective social assistance looks like.

Welcoming Newcomers

They came from 124 countries, but now call Toronto home. This year we supported 8,930 newcomers as they found their footing in Canada.
WoodGreen Community Services provided 41,048 hours of English language instruction.

Our People Make It Possible

"This report shows the results of the extraordinary commitment of 1118 dedicated staff and 450 volunteers. This year alone, volunteers contributed 25,510 hours of service – that’s nearly three full years of time spent helping fellow citizens.

Our volunteers:

  • Supported childcare for 839 children
  • Provided transportation through 18,218 trips
  • Assisted with 921 walk-in counselling visits

These acts of generosity form the heart of WoodGreen’s community care network.

Looking Ahead

Our 2024–2027 Strategic Plan builds on these results. We will:

  • Expand affordable housing options
  • Strengthen youth mental health
  • Extend access to social assistance and employment programs
