About this Position

The Sports Referee/Game Official Volunteer helps create a safe, fair, and positive sports experience for children and youth participating in basketball and soccer programs. Volunteers are responsible for officiating games, applying rules consistently, promoting good sportsmanship, and helping participants develop teamwork, confidence, and respect for others. Working alongside coaches and facilitators, they support a fun and inclusive environment where participants can learn, grow, and enjoy being active. This role primarily supports youth participants while contributing to the overall success of the program.

 

Responsibilities

  • Officiate basketball and/or soccer games according to the program’s rules.
  • Explain rules and expectations to participants when necessary.
  • Make fair and consistent calls.
  • Maintain control of the game while keeping the environment positive.
  • Encourage good sportsmanship and respectful conduct.
  • Address minor conflicts between players appropriately.
  • Stop playing when a safety concern arises.
  • Communicate significant behavioural or safety concerns to the Lead Facilitator.
  • Work collaboratively with the Coach and Facilitators.
  • Help participants understand that the emphasis is on participation, development, teamwork and enjoyment rather than simply winning.
  • Assist with organizing game flow and transitions where needed

 

What Brings You to the Team

  • Mature and confident working with youth.
  • Knowledge of basketball and soccer rules.
  • Comfortable making decisions and communicating them clearly.
  • Able to manage disagreements without escalating conflict.
  • Positive, fair and patient.
  • Previous refereeing, coaching or sports leadership experience is an asset.
  • Current First Aid/CPR is an asset.
  • Level 1 NCCP training is an asset

Training
