Program Overview
The Community Connections program builds relations between recent immigrants and established volunteers from East Toronto neighborhoods (and beyond), public institutions, and private sector businesses, with the goal of assisting newcomers to settle and integrate into Canada while building a welcoming, inclusive, and diverse community.
Position Details
The Volunteer Walking Tour Guide plays an important role in welcoming newcomers by leading engaging and informative walking tours across Toronto neighborhoods. This role helps participants build familiarity with the city while creating a positive and inclusive community experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead 1–2 hour walking tours for groups of newcomers in various Toronto neighborhoods
- Share knowledge of local landmarks, community resources, and (optionally) historical context
- Create a welcoming, inclusive, and engaging experience for all participants
- Ensure the safety and comfort of participants during tours
- Answer questions and encourage conversation to help participants feel connected
Qualifications & Skills
- Familiarity with Toronto neighborhoods (knowledge of local history is an asset)
- Positive, cheerful, and welcoming personality
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Confidence in speaking to and guiding groups
- Enjoyment of meeting new people and sharing knowledge about the city
- Culturally sensitive and respectful of diverse backgrounds
- Physically able to walk for extended periods (1–2 hours)
Time Commitment
- Shifts available on weekdays and weekends
- Morning and evening availability required
- Flexible scheduling based on program needs
Eligibility Requirements
- Requires English proficiency at a minimum CLB Level 6 or higher
- Be 20 years of age or older

- Two references (1 personal, 1 professional)
- Vulnerable Sector Screening (instructions provided after acceptance)
Commitment
- Approximately 2 hours per month
- Minimum commitment of 6 months preferred
- Participation in the orientation session is required
