About the position

WoodGreen’s Seniors’ Care and Wellness team offers a range of integrated programs that aim to promote the wellbeing of seniors in our community. The Medical Escort program provides older adults with door-to-door escorts to medical appointments. We are seeking friendly, patient and caring individuals to assist us in delivering this essential service.

 

 

Responsibilities

  • Volunteers meet clients at their homes, ensure that they are safe and comfortable during transit and assist them in arriving at their appointment on time
  • Public transportation or Wheel Trans will be used for travel to the appointment; TTC tokens will be provided; there is no need for a personal vehicle
  • The purpose of this role is to escort the client to and from their appointment, not to act as an adviser regarding medical issues

 

 

What You Bring to the Team:

  • Sensitivity to the needs and challenges faced by seniors and adults living with disabilities
  • Professional, patient and empathetic, with a desire to help older adults living in low-income and isolated situations
  • Effective communication and active listening skills
  • Ability to keep sensitive information confidential
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds and build strong working relationships

 

Shift hours:

  • 3–4 hours per escort
  • Flexible scheduling
  • Weekday morning and afternoon shifts available

 

 

Training:

  • Orientation to WoodGreen’s programs, policies, and procedures (Virtual)
  • Senior Support Service Training (Virtual)
  • Professional Development Training (In-person)

 

 

Commitment:

  • 3-month minimum commitment

 

 

Screening Requirements:

  • Vulnerable Sector Screening
  • (2) References check

 

 

Catchment areas:

  • East Toronto(Victoria Park Ave. to Bayview Ave., Eglington Ave. E. to Lake Shore Blvd)
  • West Toronto(Yonge to Dufferin Street, Eglington Ave. E. to Lake Shore Blvd. )

COVID-19 Precautions

  • WoodGreen provides volunteers with masks, sanitizer and face shields; masks are provided to clients if required
  • PPE training will be conducted to orient new volunteers to COVID-19 precautions
  • Effective September 7, 2021, all new volunteers will be required to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination at least 14 days prior to commencing volunteering
