Program Overview

The Community Connections program builds relations between recent immigrants and established volunteers from East Toronto neighbourhoods (and beyond), public institutions, and private sector businesses, with the goal of assisting newcomers to settle and integrate into Canada while building a welcoming, inclusive, and diverse community.

 

Career Mentorship

Skilled newcomers are paired with established Canadian mentors from similar professions to assist with transitioning and succeeding in the workplace.

 

Professional Networking and Seminars

An opportunity to meet Community Connections volunteers, employers and guest speakers from diverse professional backgrounds to gain insight into Canadian business communications and culture.

 

Life coaching and career coaching seminars are also offered.

 

We’re looking for mentors in:

  • Programing, App & Web Development, IT Managers, Analysts, Cyber Experts, QA/App Testing, UI/UX Design, etc.
  • Finance & Banking: Accountants, Bookkeepers, Financial Advisors, Regulatory Compliance & Auditing, Analyst, etc.
  • Engineering: Automotive, Sustainable Transport, Oil & Gas, Renewable Energy, Material Engineering.
  • Sales & Marketing

 

Responsibilities:

  • Provide insight into your industry, Canadian workplace culture and skills like leadership, communication and goal setting.
  • Act as a coach by listening, motivating and assisting newcomer professionals with their job search and networking.
  • Share information about professional licensing and educational requirements and help explore career paths.
  • Attend orientation and mentorship meetings online.
  • Mentoring newcomer professionals in providing information related to the job market, understanding best practices, networking tips and providing job search techniques.

 

 

Skill Requirements:

  • Two years of professional working experience in Canada and with the ability to share your lived experience and sector knowledge
  • Excellent computer and technology skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office 365
  • Familiarity with MS Teams and CRM systems is an asset
  • Must be comfortable working with people from diverse cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Ability to respect clients’ privacy and maintain confidentiality of sensitive information, in the office and remotely

 

Training:

The VSS department provides orientation, specific handover training, and other career development opportunities.

Commitment:

  • Must commit for at least 1-2 hours per week, 3 months commitment
  • You must take the training and abide by the code of conduct of WoodGreen, as set out in the application.
  • Be able to work onsite and/or hybrid.
  • The volunteering schedule is flexible during weekdays and weekends
