Homeward Bound, developed by WoodGreen and launched in 2004, is an award-winning program that empowers single mothers experiencing homelessness or inadequate housing to achieve education, employment, and financial stability. Unique in Canada, this four-year program provides intensive wrap-around supports that remove the barriers preventing single mothers from moving out of poverty. Participants gain the skills, education, and work experience needed to build independence and long-term stability for themselves and their families.
Originally piloted in Toronto, the Homeward Bound model has since been adapted by social service agencies across Canada. These agencies form a Community of Practice, collaborating on knowledge sharing, resource development, capacity building, and coordinated service delivery. In addition to WoodGreen’s Toronto program, Homeward Bound is now offered in Peterborough, Halton, and Brantford-Brant.
Homeward Bound offers participants a comprehensive set of supports, including:
- Fully funded two-year college education in a marketable field
- Academic upgrading program for college entrance
- Affordable furnished housing
- Goal-oriented case management
- Child care and after-school programs, including tutoring and mentorship
- Access to mental health, parenting and family counselling
- 14-week unpaid internship to gain work experience
- Job search support and networking opportunities
