How to get started with your job search

The job market has changed so much in recent years. If you’ve been out of work for a while or haven’t had to look for work until now – it’s hard to know where to start. It’s easier to start with WoodGreen by your side. Here are a few tips to get you started:

Explore and focus on what interests you most.

Consider your work style, what you're good at, what you are qualified for and what motivates you. Are there specific companies that you're interested in based on what they stand for, or what they do?

Update your resume, cover letter and references.

It’s critical that you tailor your resume and cover letter to the job – every time. Focus on achievements over responsibilities; and show you have the relevant experience and chops to do the job.

Check that your social media accounts are employer-friendly.

Hiring managers often screen candidates' social media. If any photos or posts could negatively impact your job search, change your profile settings or delete the individual posts.

Prepare to nail your interview.

Begin preparing for your interview days or weeks in advance. Make sure you research the industry and the company, review the job description and think about how your skills and experience match their needs, and note down questions to ask the interviewer.

Follow up with thank you and next steps.

Be pro-active and send a thank you email within 24 hours of your interview and ask about next steps required, timeline for feedback and if any other information is required from you to move forward with the process.

Searching for a job is also a skill, and sometimes it’s difficult for job seekers to know what the right approach is.

The current job market, the COVID-19 pandemic, your employment qualifications are also key factors that could influence your ability to find a job.
