Frequent Asked Questions

  • If I’m interested in a volunteer position, how do I apply?

From the Volunteer tab, click on “Volunteer Opportunities”, scroll down to view all available positions, click on “Learn More” to read the job description, and then click on “Apply” on the right side of the page.

  • What documents are required to apply for a volunteer position?

Volunteers are required to complete a background check (either Sterling Backcheck or a Vulnerable Sector Check). Some departments or roles may require additional qualifications, such as a degree or a valid driver’s license. You will also need to provide two references (one personal and one professional).

  • Will any training or orientation be offered?

Yes. We provide a general orientation session for all volunteers, regardless of the position applied for. Also, some mandatory trainings are required to be completed through our volunteer platform “Better Impact”. Additional training opportunities are offered throughout the year.

  • Do you require background screening?

Yes. All roles require a police background check, either a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) or myBackCheck, depending on the role. VSC is required for client-facing roles. myBackCheck is used when there is minimal or supervised client interaction.
The VSC process may take up to 8 weeks in Toronto due to high volume, and up to 2 weeks in other parts of the GTA. myBackCheck results are typically available within 24-48 hours.

  • Will I have to pay for a background check?

This depends on the program or role you’re applying for. Please contact us at [email protected] for more details.

  • I already have my Vulnerable Sector Check. Can I use it for my application?

Yes, if it was completed within the last 12 months. If it’s older than 12 months, you will be required to reapply for a new one.

  • I’m a high school student. Can I complete my 40-hour community involvement with WoodGreen?

Yes. We welcome high school students who wish to volunteer, especially during the summer. However, opportunities may be limited due to age restrictions. Please contact us at [email protected] for more details.

  • Who can I use as a reference?

Where possible, we prefer professional references from an employer, school, or previous volunteer role. If that’s not possible, we also accept personal references (excluding immediate family members). It’s helpful to inform your references in advance so they’re prepared, this can help speed up the recruitment process.

  • Do you provide reference letters to your volunteers?

Yes. We’re happy to provide reference letters for volunteers who have completed their volunteer assignments with WoodGreen and showed good performance.
