Frequently Asked Questions
Will any training or orientation be offered?
We would never think of placing you in a role without training! We provide orientation and training for all our volunteers regardless of the position they apply for.
I really want to help and currently have a lot of free time to volunteer more than once a week in more than one position. Is this possible?
We appreciate your initiative and your passion. While we do have some volunteer roles that work well when paired with other tasks – such as medical escorting, we ask the majority of our volunteers to commit to one position for a minimum of three months before exploring other volunteer opportunities with us.
Do you require background screening?
Yes. All of our roles require you to complete a vulnerable sector screening (police background check) prior to working with clients. WoodGreen will process this for you if you do not have an existing screening that has been completed in the last 12 months. Depending on your address, there may be a charge for this service as levied by you police jurisdiction.
I am interested in volunteering with WoodGreen, but I am also interested in employment opportunities. Do you hire volunteers?
Our Volunteer Services team is not involved in the recruitment or hiring of WoodGreen staff. Job openings posted to our website. WoodGreen also has 3 Employment Ontario sites to help you in your job search.
I’m a high school student. Can I complete my 40-hour community involvement with WoodGreen?
Yes. We welcome students who want to volunteer during the summer. We do have limited opportunities for students however because of age restrictions. Please contact us for more details.
Who will you accept as a reference?
Where possible, we ask for professional references from an employer, school or other volunteer role. We understand that this is not always possible, and we do accept references from friends etc., just not immediate family members. It is very helpful if you connect with your references in advance to let them know we will be contacting them as this can help to speed up the recruitment process.
Do you provide reference letters to your volunteers?
We are happy to provide reference letters for volunteers who have completed their volunteer assignment with WoodGreen.
I’m looking to fill my court-ordered hours, can I do that at WoodGreen?
Depending on the nature of your offense, we may be able to find you a suitable position. If not, we’re more than happy to help you find an agency where you can volunteer.
I work Monday to Friday 9 to 5, are there any roles I can volunteer in?
Most of our volunteer opportunities take place during regular business hours. We do have some positions (for example, our Community Connections roles) that take place outside of these times.
Do you have any opportunities for group volunteering?
We have a number of opportunities for corporate groups, for more information please click here.
Do you offer student placements?

What can I expect from volunteering?
You will experience the satisfaction of knowing you are providing a vital service to the community. You will make new friends, learn new skills, and probably grow in self-esteem and confidence. There may be some challenging moments, but remember your involvement is brightening others’ lives and making a real difference.
