WoodGreen Immigrant Services:
Every year, WoodGreen assists over 8,000 immigrants and their families settle into their new lives in Canada, while helping them to develop a sense of belonging. We offer a range of no-cost services aimed at supporting newcomers to live independently within the community, including newcomer orientation, one-on-one counseling, English language programs, settlement and employment workshops, employment coaching, connection to employers, employment bridging program for internationally-trained professionals, certified Microsoft computer training, youth programs, self-help networks, a newcomer volunteer program, and social and recreational activities.

How can we help you?

WoodGreen's Immigrant Services helps immigrants at different stages of their settlement. We understand the challenges of adjusting to a new language, a new culture and new surroundings. That's why we work closely with you and your family to help you settle into your new life, whether that means helping you learn about the city, acquire English skills, begin your job search, secure your first professional job, find affordable housing, locate the right school for your children, access important community resources or develop a network of friends.

WoodGreen's services for new immigrants

Newcomer Youth Services Program (aged 13-24)

One-on-One Settlement Information and Referral Services
Our newcomer youth services serves youth ages 13-24, guiding them to develop greater self-confidence and a proud sense of belonging to Canada.

We offer one-on-one information and referral counselling and introduction to Canadian systems and culture to newcomer youth, with an overall focus to enhance their participation in and integration into school, community and the labour market.


Settlement and employment workshops
We offer newcomer orientation sessions to help youth successfully link the culture of their country of origin with our Canadian multicultural society, including cultural events both within and outside of the city.

We also offer workshops and group programs to help ensure success for youth in their academic and personal achievement.


Newcomer Youth Services helps youth find out about summer, part-time and full-time jobs and explore career and university/college options.

We offer workshops about writing a resume and interview preparation. We refer newcomer youth to youth employment programs once they fully understand how to look for and keep a job. To help youth with their financial knowledge, we offer brief workshops on how to budget and save money.


Homework Club
Every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 3:15 -6pm at 815 Danforth Avenue

Youth can get free help with their homework assignments in any subject. Our staff can help students one on one and in a group with assignments. We have computers and internet access available to help students complete their assignments as well. All youth ages 13-24 are welcome. As part of the homework club, we offer information sessions about Canadian events, schools, universities and seasonal activities.

"Say What" English Conversation Circle for Youth
Every Thursday 3:30-5:00pmat 815 Danforth Avenue

We offer English conversation circle for all newcomer youth ages 13 to 24. Topics are relevant to youth’s experience in Canada. Also, youth newcomers ages 18-24 can register for LINC classes through our program.

Completing High School Volunteer Hours
Our Newcomer Youth Services program can help youth find a volunteer placement to quickly and easily complete their high school volunteering requirements.

Family Events - Recreational and Cultural Activities
We help newcomer youth learn about educational and fun places to visit. We offer youth free or discounted prices along with guided tours of various Toronto cultural and recreational sites such as the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), Ontario Science Centre, Ontario Place, Toronto Island, Sugar Bush and Niagara Falls.

Settlement Program for Newcomers (aged 24 and above)

Newcomer information sessions
WoodGreen provides new immigrants with a practical orientation to life in Canada. Our counsellors will help you understand your rights and responsibilities as a new Canadian and learn about the city and, Canadian systems, fill out important forms, launch a job search and find affordable housing.

One-on-one counseling
Many newcomers find the stress of settling in a new country too much to cope with alone. WoodGreen offers one-one-one counseling, providing information, guidance and emotional support to newcomers who need it.

Information workshops
Offering practical information workshops for newcomers, WoodGreen covers a broad range of topics from what you need to know about parenting in Canada, to how to file a tax form, determine what benefits you are entitled to, or target a specific profession in your job search.

Self-help networks
WoodGreen's self-help networks are designed to facilitate discussions around settlement and employment challenges and opportunities, giving newcomers the chance to connect and provide mutual support to each other. These networks include the Engineer Club, Administrator Club, Chinese Workers Support Network, and Parenting Network.

Social & recreational activities
Providing regular social and recreational opportunities, WoodGreen encourages newcomers to share food and cultural traditions together, learn about the Canadian way of life, and improve their conversation skills.

Newcomer volunteer program
Newcomers can gain valuable Canadian workplace experience by becoming part of the Newcomer Volunteer Program. Volunteers can get involved in providing clerical support, setting up programs, promoting workshops and more.

Satellite Services
WoodGreen‘s satellite offices provide newcomers with easy access to settlement and employment services in their own neighbourbood. We partner with the LINC classes of the Toronto District School Board, local libraries, community health centres, early year centres, and cultural centres in East Toronto to deliver services where the clients are.

English Language Program for Newcomers

WoodGreen offers a number of programs to help newcomers strengthen their language skills, including LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) and ELT (Enhanced Language Training ) that range from LINC level literacy/1 to ELT level 9 , and conducted in day, evening and Saturday. The program focuses on daily English skills, pronunciation, grammar, workplace communication as well as specific language required for the engineering, IT, health-care and finance/accounting fields. We also run a weekly group where you can practice your English conversation called Talk English Program.

Most of these classes have a child minding program available.

Our service location is along the subway line (Coxwell Subway), and we provide TTC tickets to those who require transportation support.

Host Program

The Host Program is a befriending process that helps newcomers overcome the stress of moving to Canada and become comfortable in their new country, city and community.
Through organized activities such as networking groups, English Conversation Circles, mentorship for internationally trained professionals, cultural exchange and social activities, the Host Program encourages newcomers to meet and bond with local hosts.

The program aims to:

  • Develop contacts and local knowledge that will help newcomers settle in Toronto and access their professional field
  • Improve their English conversation skills
  • Gain knowledge about useful resources
  • Share experiences from Canada and other parts of the world
  • Learn about Canadian culture for everyday use and in the workplace

Employment Support Services for Newcomers

WoodGreen also offers a number of other services that many newcomers benefit from including employment bridging program for internationally-trained professionals, Job search coaching services, Job Search Workshops for Newcomers, a certified Microsoft Computer Training Program (minimum fee applies), housing and high-quality child care. Employment and Language Programs for Internationally-Trained Professionals
Employment and Language Programs for Internationally-Trained Professionals is an employment-focused bridging program for internationally-trained professionals who have at least intermediate(Level 4/5) English and whose career orientation and international training are in one of these six sectors:

  1. Accounting/Financial Services
  2. IT
  3. Engineering
  4. Health Care
  5. Sales & Marketing
  6. Social & Community Services

What Employment and Language Programs for Internationally-Trained Professionals offers:

  • An individual program for each participant. Together with the Case Counsellor and other staff members at WoodGreen, the participant will develop a goal-oriented action plan, whose purpose it is to help the participant achieve a successful job search outcome: employment in the participants’s field

  • Customized sector specific language supports and workplace oriented communication skills, especially written and oral skills

  • Customized assistance from one-on-one coaches for both job search (customized resume and interview preparation) and language enhancement purposes

  • Support through WoodGreen staff Participants are supported by the Job Developer who connect participants with employers for jobs and voluntary placements

  • Access to supportive, focused, and hands-on workshops and recruitment sessions

  • Access to Mentors in their profession to help them with various aspects of their job search and settlement process

  • Ongoing support from their employment bridging team once they have accepted a job offer and started at their place of employment

  • A 16-week time period to focus on their individual job search. A schedule will be worked out on an individual basis to cover multiple activities so that participants can continue other activities such as a survival job and other obligations and responsibilities. This is a highly customized, individual program, particularly for instruction in English communication skills.

  • Participants agree to join those workshops or interventions that will allow them to develop a successful bridging mechanism. This may include language enhancement, training, coaching/mentoring, research, practice sessions, and/or any other strategy that will result in a positive and productive job search outcome

  • Participants will work with the Case Counsellor to review their situation on a regular basis and define areas where additional supports are needed

  • Participants, once employed, will stay in touch with the Case Counsellor and Job Developer to troubleshoot work situations and to report successes. This is intended to be a supportive strategy to help participants navigate any problems or issues they may encounter in terms of workplace situations and workplace culture

One-on-one job coaching
If you feel that you need individual help with your job search, our Job Search Coaching Centre offers FREE one-on-one coaching customized to your specific needs. WoodGreen's experienced employment consultants can offer you the following:

  • Hands-on support writing effective resumes and cover letters
  • Practice to help you prepare for a job interview
  • Information on where to find job postings
  • Support in locating potential job leads
  • Guidance on how to make your job search more effective
  • Ongoing encouragement and support throughout your job search

Job search workshops for new immigrants
If you are a landed immigrant or a convention refugee, and you have been in Canada less than three years, WoodGreen's Job Search Workshop Program for new immigrants can help you learn about the job market and support you in your job search.We offer a series of FREE day and evening workshops designed specifically for newcomers which can teach you everything from locating job leads, to creating effective resumes and developing your job interview skills.

At your first appointment, you will be asked to provide some information about yourself, as well as your immigration documentation. Our friendly, professional counsellors will then work with you to determine how we can best support you and your family.
