Homeward Bound was highlighted in a mock-celebrity ad campaign in January and February 2014. That campaign went viral and generated significant media coverage of Homeward Bound and WoodGreen.

How the program works

Unique in Canada, Homeward Bound is a holistic, 4-year job-readiness program featuring: affordable housing; free, quality child care; training and post-secondary education in a marketable skill; personal development support; mental health and recreational services for children; and a guaranteed, family-sustaining career opportunity at the end of the program.

Homeward Bound is facilitated by an Industry Council with representatives from banking, technology, law, and public sectors, including BMO, BNS, CIBC, Dell, IBM, McCarthy Tetrault, OSLER, Accompass, PWC, RBC, TD, Torys LLP, Xerox Global Services and with financial support from both public and private partners.

Since 2004, 176 women and 216 children have made their home at Homeward Bound and the accomplishments of the mothers have been significant. Graduates are now in career track positions such as law clerk, data management officer, and technical services analyst, working at companies such as TD, RBC, CIBC, BMO, and Scotiabank.

A model with great potential for application in other urban centres, Homeward Bound has won a number of prestigious awards including:

  • Ontario Non-Profit Housing Excellence Award
  • Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation Housing Award
  • Conference Board of Canada Community Learning Award – Honourable Mention
  • International Computer Driving License Impact Lives Award

Homeward Bound was also recognized by the Province of Ontario and the Ontario Trillium Foundation through a Local Poverty Reduction Fund grant to evaluate the new Transitions to Success phase of Homeward Bound.
