Local seniors can beat the 'winter blues' by participating in a variety of programs and activities to stay active, healthy and entertained throughout the winter months.

According to Dorina Rico, director of client services, the merging of Community Care East York and WoodGreen Community Services at the start of this year strengthens the services offered for seniors during the winter months in the community.

Rico said that during the winter season, some seniors may be afraid to go outside because of the cold weather or if they've had past falls or have been ill.

To solve that challenge, Community Care East York offers indoor programs for seniors such as yoga and tai chi.

"We want people to ensure that they remain flexible during the winter time. Sometimes people will be afraid to go outside because of the rain, the snow and the ice that it reduces their mobility," Rico said.

"By actually being in programs that encourages you to walk, to do some light yoga, especially strength building and flexibility, you remain healthy and flexible."

She said it's important during the winter for seniors to have a balance of activities - both indoors with accessible programs and outdoors for fresh air and to attend outings and events.

She added that taxi door-to-door services are available at reduced rates for seniors to attend activities and programs.

The East York Seniors Centre on Greenwood Avenue provides opportunities for adults aged 50 and older to socialize, learn new skills, participate in a variety of activities, volunteer and learn about community support.

The centre offers a variety of wellness programs and social activities including: fitness, crafts, discussion groups, computer classes, day trips and outings, weekly dining and the monthly diners club, a men's club, annual fundraising events, income tax clinics, as well as access to foot care and blood pressure clinics by a registered nurse.

An Adult Day Program is also offered, a special therapeutic recreational program for seniors who are unable to participate in, or attend, regular community activities due to physical and or/cognitive impairments. This program is located at 840 Coxwell Ave., Suite 101 (on the ground floor of the building across from Toronto East General Hospital).

To register for an activity, call 416-467-1166 or sign up at the centre. Membership is free. Fees for programs and outings are priced individually.

The East York Seniors Centre is located at 1108 Greenwood Ave in Cosburn United Church (on the northwest corner of Greenwood and Cosburn Avenues). For a guide to monthly wellness and activities, visit www.ccey.org.
