Shinny Hockey Tournament The 1st annual Shinny Hockey Tournament was held on Sunday, February 13 at Jimmy Simpson Park. Huge thanks to David Asling-Snee and his group of enthusiastic hockey players for hosting such a great event. The tournament raised $360.00 for WoodGreen’s Newcomer Youth program. David and his team will be working with WoodGreen staff to implement a hockey related program for next season. Thanks again to everyone to supporting WoodGreen!
I had the opportunity to gather a group of close friends together to play a game of outdoor, shinny hockey in Toronto’s east end in February – to coincide with Hockey Day in Canada. The idea was that this would be the 1st annual event where we, as participants, would have a friendly game of hockey and raise a little money for a local charitable organization that provides benefit to those in our community who can use it. I had familiarity with The WoodGreen Foundation and connected with them as part of the research for our event. Susan Melnick, (from WoodGreen) responded with a ton of support and energy immediately and really took the time to help us learn about the benefits WoodGreen brings to the community. After our review, we felt strongly that we’d provide our first year’s gift to WoodGreen’s Newcomer Youth Program. The inaugural event was a great success and our sincere thanks to WoodGreen, the City of Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation as well our friends who participated and contributed their time and money. The East Side Shinny Day –Annual group definitely looks forward to continuing to explore the programs Woodgreen brings to the Toronto community as we look forward to a bigger and better annual event next year!
